Lay Readers
The lay readers, or lectors, proclaim the Word of God during liturgical celebrations, primarily at Mass. They read the Old and New Testament readings (but not the Gospel, reserved for clergy) and sometimes the Psalm or intercessions. This ministry, rooted in Vatican II’s call for active lay participation, enhances the liturgy by sharing Scripture with clarity and reverence. Lay readers prepare spiritually and technically to convey God’s message effectively, fostering the assembly’s engagement with the Word. They serve under pastoral guidance, reflecting the Church’s mission to proclaim the Gospel.
