Our mission is to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ, nurture the spiritual growth of our community, and live out God’s love through worship, service, and unity.

Our Vision

We envision a vibrant, faith-filled community where every soul is drawn closer to Christ through the intercession of Our Lady of the Assumption.

Our History

The Assumption Catholic Church in Nkwo Nike, located in the bustling Enugu East Local Government Area of Enugu State, is a cornerstone of the local Catholic community and serves as the headquarters for the Nkwo Nike Deanery within the Roman Catholic Diocese of Enugu.

Establishment of the Diocese and the Parish

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Enugu was formally erected on November 12, 1962, carved out of the larger Archdiocese of Onitsha. This coincided with Nigeria's push for independence (1960) and the Biafran War (1967–1970), during which the Church played a vital role in relief efforts and spiritual support amid ethnic and civil strife. The Nkwo Nike Deanery, encompassing around 28 parishes today, emerged in the post-war era as part of the diocese's reorganization to serve the growing urban and rural populations in eastern Enugu.

Assumption Parish itself likely traces its origins to the 1970s or 1980s, a period of explosive church planting in Igboland due to population growth and migration to Enugu city. Named after the Assumption of Mary (a major Catholic feast celebrated on August 15), it reflects the strong Marian devotion common in Nigerian Catholicism. The parish started as a mission station or sub-parish, possibly under the oversight of nearby churches like those in Abakpa Nike or Iji Nike, before gaining full parish status. By the 1990s, it had developed into a central hub for the Nkwo Nike community, hosting sacraments, youth groups, and outreach programs amid Nigeria's economic challenges.

Growth and Modern Developments

In the 21st century, Assumption Parish has grown alongside Enugu's urbanization. The area around Nkwo Nike Junction—flanked by small businesses, the Nkwo Market, and landmarks like Nike Lake Resort Hotel—has made it a vibrant, accessible worship center. The parish has been involved in diocesan initiatives, such as skills development programs introduced by the Enugu Catholic Mission in 2021 to combat youth unemployment, a pressing issue in southeastern Nigeria.

As the deanery headquarters, it coordinates activities for neighboring parishes, including formation programs and charitable works. Recent years have seen enhancements like community events (e.g., prose recitals and youth gatherings shared on its Facebook page) and adaptations to post-COVID worship. The current parish priest, Rev. Fr. Celestine Chidi Nwogbu, leads a team that includes assistants like Rev. Fr. Godsent Aneke and Rev. Fr. Gerald Onyia, continuing the legacy of pastoral care.
